postmortem: girl im rotting


this game is..... not my usual thing.

sure, i do all sorts of serious topics in my games, but theyre usually still funny and have shit like the minions or mario. this is original and scary. sorry about that! this game was made partially as an exploration into some darker subjects as well as venting about certain mental problems i have. yknow how it is. 

if i explained every little thing about this game itd made me look insane (more than the game itself does, i mean) so i think the story should stand by itself. you either get it or you dont.

so instead, id like to talk about the music. and by talk about it, i mean im going to rant about it. the music in this game sucks and thats by design, dammit.

the main menu song, "mainmenu," is an incredibly short music box piece inspired by the music box being used in Higurashi's soundtrack. its short and hard to listen to, but repeats to force you to listen to it constantly. the kind of thing that makes you want to hurry up and leave the main menu and enter the game itself.

the song "jazzy thing" that plays during calm conversation is a really funny piece, a boring MIDI song with weird organ and a consistently cool bassline. i wanted to make something calm but disjointed, something that made you think it was trying to be safe and failing due to some unknown quality.

"blue" is a really boring song made interesting by a MIDI sax programmed to sound like a revving engine. genuinely stupid shit but it makes the song not suck somehow. this is a sort of theme for Lila, the rude and sexy headmate, because i wanted to have a slow, repetitive song to represent her cold demeanor.

the song "rot" with the spacey bubbling noises and low synths was an easy one to make. simple esoteric noises that make you feel like youre drowning.

"stress," the song with just some synths and a bell, was a simple one to make. the background hum is actually a cymbal hit in reverse and slowed to the point of losing all meaning. its got a stressful atmosphere, which is why i gave it that name and used it for scenes where Beth was freaking out internally.

the short piano piece "pian" was another Higurashi inspired song. i think you get the idea just by hearing it.

the song "hazzy" that is just a disjointed piano and some drums was made unrelated to the game at first, but i felt like the simple instrumentation and the stressful chaos made for a good song to freak out to in select moments of fear.

the soft synth song that turns into a saxy dance tune is called "sex" because i wrote it for the sex scene. its a little too upbeat for a scene like that but that helps make even the more tender moments of the game feel off. 

the quiz song "quiz" was made to be the most obnoxious life hack TikTok music imaginable just to piss you off. sorry.


that's it for the music. the game surprisingly didnt take a lot of time to concept or write; the hardest thing was revising it all to make it less repetitive and vague. it probably still is anyway. oops.
