Postmortem: Christian Vampire Boy's Love Story

[this post containes minor spoilers for the game]

new game, new wordy post about how it went. this game ended up taking longer time than expected (it was supposed to be done around the same time as Paisni) but it ended up working in favor of a halloween release date. this game was fun to write/design for, as visual novels typically are for me, but there was so much you could do in the game that it really got annoying coming to it. in the end though, i had fun.

the art was the first thing i did, after coming up with who's who and all. it as the first time i really drew all the characters for a visual novel, as the last couple of games i did i stole a lot of assets. it was pretty fun coming up with a uniform that changed depending on the character to show slight differences in their personality (all the way up to Bill who neglected the uniform altogether). in terms of backgrounds i thought stock photos fit the best for the character artstyle and it is still really funny to me everytime i see a screenshot. the music was kind of last minute but i really wanted to capture a certain feeling with MIDI and the genres i used, and even though i couldve maybe reworked "cafeteria theme" i think the disjointedness of it fits the cheap and asinine aesthetic.

writing how each path went was mostly done at the same time as coding because i write the best like that, however i did come up with some specific concepts i wanted to see. David's bad ending, the one secret bad ending i dont want to name, and Bill's whole line are examples of premade ones. Lucas' line was the one that seemed to have the least amount of preparation behind it and yet i really love how it came out. lol. the choices were the most fun i had. when i make games with choices i love the subversion of making the obviously bad choice the correct one. i made an entire game based around it once (which i will post if i can find it) and it pissed my dad off because he did not expect it lol. while i dont wanna piss people off with my games, i want people to get that my games have a really silly mindset, and that fucking around usually gets you further than playing it straight.

the idea to make a Christian Vampire Boy's Love story came during playing the Vampire: the Requiem with Paisni, talking to the storyteller and saying how much fun it would be to make a BL game based around Lancea et Sanctum (the christian vampire faction). i wanted to end up using original characters, however, since the only Lancea i met in that game were women (lol).

its been fun making this but it scares me in regards to making another visual novel. this one was so much work, doing another one sounds like a lot.
